Get Unstuck with Two Different Home Organization Ideas

If you are feeling bored with the way your home is organized, you can easily transform and recreate your existing home. Get unstuck by using your creative skills to reorganize and revamp your existing home.

It can be difficult to come up with new home organization ideas, so here a few different ideas to help you on your way.

Get Creative and Mind Map your House

Use mind map software to mind map your current house organization. The process of mind mapping helps you to brainstorm and think creatively, in ways that you might not otherwise have done so if you were just sitting in your lounge room thinking.

Start off with your home as the center of the mind map, and create the branches to identify different areas of your home. The best way is to list all the different rooms in your house, for example, your living room, dining room, games room, bedroom, store room, attic and garage.

Once you have created your branches, you can start brainstorming the action items required for each room. So example, you could start off with your garage. Think about all the action items that need to be completed for your garage. Perhaps it’s that garage sale you were thinking about holding but never got around to it. Other to do items to add to the garage branch of your mind map might be to list surplus household items on Free Cycle community.

Your office or home study branch of your mind map might have action items listed such as the following:

Visit home organization stores to purchase container storage boxes;

Archive old paperwork;

Create new system for automating bills;

Steam clean the carpet;

Put a “do not disturb” sign outside your home office;

Renew Your Space By Hiring a Professional Organizer

On a related topic, perhaps you have been feeling the stress of not managing with household chores or needing the services of a professional organizer. Action items to include on your to do list include:

Get someone to help with cleaning once a week;

Visit the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) site to get some home organization help;

Decide what type of specialized help you need to organize your home. It may be an organizer to help with renewing the existing space in your home to create a more relaxing ambiance.

Renewing the space in your existing home can be an uplifting experience. It will bring in increased vitality and energy for each member of your family.

If you’re feeling stuck for home organization ideas, it’s time to energize and recreate the existing space in your home.

Organize Your Home – But Whatever You Do, Don’t Strive for Perfection

A few people have commented to me about the agony that they go through to achieve perfection with their home organization efforts.

Perfection is not the essential ingredient to organize your home well. Instead of striving for perfection, it is better to start a project anyway, and move in a forward direction to achieve your outcome. You might find that you may have to zig zag your way along your intended course, but you will eventually achieve your goals.

The Two Declutterer Personalities

Think of the two scenarios, and two individuals, let’s call them Molly and Janet. Molly likes to have everything perfect. She starts to plan a project, and in her mind, she conjures up beautiful thoughts of her perfectly decorated living room, complete with designer furniture from her favorite organizing store. Several months later, Molly has abandoned her project to redesign and declutter her lounge room. Striving for perfection got in the way of taking action to fulfill her dreams.

On the other hand, Janet decided that achieving her goals to 90% perfection is good enough. She set about with the same plan of redesigning and decluttering her living room. She took a piece of paper, and jotted down her ideas and goals related to how she would redesign her living room.

Prepare a Simple Action Plan to Declutter

She prepared a simple action plan of the ten things she needed to do to achieve her goals and didn’t dwell on the intricacies of how to organize your home. In fact, she took action the next day, and started to declutter her living room. Her first task was to remove clutter from her living room floor. That task only took 10 minutes of her time on a spare afternoon that she had. She also mopped and cleaned her floor, so it looked sparkling clean for visitors that were coming over for dinner that night.

Take Action to Complete Your Declutter and Organizing Tasks

Several tasks and actions completed, a few weeks down the track, Janet had decluttered her living room, and also shifted her furniture around, and got rid of surplus furniture that didn’t fit with the new redesign of her lounge. Janet also looked forward to visit her favorite home organization store to put the finishing touches to her new lounge room redesign. Though her husband wasn’t really looking forward to visiting the home organizing store!

Don’t Strive for Perfection

Perfection is not the ideal way to organize your home, as it is an obstacle that sometimes prevents you from getting started with your next home organization project.

Decide on a home organization project that you will tackle, such as how to organize your room over a weekend. Throw perfection out the door and get started with taking action to declutter and organize your home. You’ll be thankful that you got started with your new project, rather than be still thinking about that perfectly, organized home.

Home Organizing Products – Friend or Foe?

If you have ever stepped into any of the home organization stores in your city, you’ll be familiar with the lure to purchase more than a few home organizing products for your home.

Visiting home organization stores can be fun. However, I suggest that you take the time to look around your house to see what you really need, before visiting these organizing stores.

As you navigate your way through the aisles of these stores, many different types of home organization products will tempt you to buy them. Sound familiar?

So here are some tips to follow before you next head out to visit your local homeware store.

Tip No 1  – Make a Shopping List

Make a list before you step out the door. This helps to avoid the urge to purchase items that you don’t really need.

Tip No 2 – Clear the Clutter

Spend some time at home to reduce and eliminate clutter in your home. There’s nothing worse than coming home to find that you can’t fit the item of furniture that you bought for your lounge room, because it is too cluttered.

Tip No3 – Clear the Chaos in your Home

Clear the chaos in your home. Clutter can take an emotional toll if you let it continue to build up in your home. Or perhaps the clutter culprits are other members of the household. It’s time to get the family together to have a declutter day.

Tip No 4 – Is It a Functional Item?

Decide whether the item you are thinking about purchasing is functional. Does it provide that much needed extra storage in the bedroom that has limited closet space? Or perhaps a suitable hanging closet organizer will help to get the kids more organized in their bedroom with their clothes and other belongings?

Tip No 5 – Enhance Your Home

Does the item enhance the look of your room? Or does it in fact make the room look more cluttered? Visualize the item in your room or house. How does it feel?

Tip No 6 – Shop Around

If you have a few home organization stores in your city or neighborhood, visit a few to compare what stock they have. You may find better variety

Tip No 7 – Shop Online

As well as visiting home organizing stores in person, you can sit back, relax and shop online. There are some very attractive online shops that provide a fantastic range of home organizing products to choose from.

Tip No 8 – Look For Bargains

Don’t you love the thrill of picking up a good bargain at the shops? Year end sales and discounts during special holidays are a great time to go shopping for homeware and household products.

Tip No 9 – Remember to Declutter!

Remember to declutter and purge surplus items at home. If you don’t really need an item, resist the temptation to bring home more stuff. This stuff may well turn out to be more clutter down the track.

Have fun shopping at your favorite home organization stores. Hope that you pick up a good or item.

But remember not to bring home any clutter. Just ask yourself this simple question – home organizing products – friend or foe?

Six Home Organizing Tips to Help You Get Organized Quickly

A big challenge that most home organizers face when deciding to reorganize their home, is deciding exactly where to start.

Here are six home organizing tips to help you get organized quickly:

Tip One: Pretend You’re Shifting House

Recall the last time you shifted house. You approach packing up your house in a systematic fashion, room by room. Even if you are not planning to shift homes any time soon, you can still apply the same systematic approach when reorganizing your home. Pick any room, and start organizing the room as quickly as you can.

Tip Two: Reorganize Room by Room

Once you have selected a room to reorganize, you will want to make a list of all the tasks that need attending to for that specific room. Your home organizing list will look something like this:

Task 1 – Collect two boxes – one box for throwing away stuff and one box to keep. This will help keep you on track with getting organized.

Task 2 – Purge the closet. Your closet will may be filled with lots of stuff, and you’ll want to purge items from your closet as quickly and as much you can.

Task 3 – Clear boxes out of the room temporarily, and vacuum the carpet or clean your floor. There’s nothing like revitalizing the room with a nice clean floor.

Task 4 – Whilst you have the room nice and clear, this is an opportune time to reorganize the room just the way you would look like it. This is a good time to get rid of furniture that is surplus to your requirements. It is also a good to rethink the way your room is organized.

Think about ways of shifting around the furniture to better utilize existing space. Or perhaps the room looks overcrowded with too many ornaments and furniture, that is causing excess clutter in the room.

Task 5 – Reduce clutter in the room. You would have identified in the previous task some different ways to reorganize the room. Work on the last few steps of reducing any additional clutter in the room. It could be the way that your bookshelves are filled to the brim with surplus books and magazines.

Task 6 – Clear the bookshelves.

Have you noticed extra space or capacity in the bookshelves that could be better utilized? Now is an opportune to give your bookshelves a thorough spring clean.

Tip Three: Reduce Any Extra Clutter in the Room

Pick up stuff off the floor. And aim to keep the floor clear of clutter from here on.

Tip Three: Create extra storage space in your Room

Create extra storage space in your room based on existing furniture. Good home organization ideas include creating and utilizing extra shelf space on your bookshelves.

Tip Four: Purge your Closet like there’s no Tomorrow!

This is one of my favorite home organization tips. Your closet can be purged of surplus items to create extra storage space. Rather, than stepping out the door to buy more closet organizing systems, you can create extra space with a few hours of work.

Tip Five: Create New Space In your Closet

Once you’ve purged your closet of surplus items, you’ll have freed up extra space in your closet. Look at all that free space in your closet, and enjoy the new space that you’ve created.

Tip Six: Be creative and Find Innovative Ways to make use of your Closet Space

Some good home organizing ideas include installing extra shelves to organize and group like items together. For example, one shelf for your socks, one shelf for your winter accessories like gloves and scarves. Another shelf could be used for accessories such as belts.

Hope you’ve enjoyed these six home organizing tips to help you get organized quickly.
