So the day is coming closer for your declutter day. Here is a handy checklist to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything.
Set a Date for the big day
Have you set a date for the big day yet? If you haven’t, it is time to get going. Mark a date in your calendar for when your whole family is free. Try and set this date at least a month in advance.
Set your Goals
Have you written down some goals for your declutter day? This may sound a bit over the top, but if don’t what you are going to achieve, by the end of your clean up day, you won’t know how well you have. Some goals to consider include cleaning up a certain number of rooms by the end of your special clean up day. Other goals may be to throw away a certain number of boxes by the end of the day. If you are a compulsive hoarder, it’s all the more important that you get into the habit of throwing away stuff.
Get Organized
If your declutter day is looming fast, make sure you get organized before the actual day. You don’t want to spend the first few hours of your clean up day, finding boxes to throw away your junk. If you work in an office, head straight to the photocopier area and find some used photocopy paper boxes. If your company doesn’t mind, ask to take them home.
Hire a Dumpster
If you think you are going to have a big clean up day, you may need to hire a dumpster. That way, you won’t get stuck for a place to throw away items. It takes a bit of legwork to ring up suitable companies to order a dumpster. Don’t delay ordering a dumpster as you won’t want to leave junk in your living room whilst you are waiting for them to deliver the dumpster.
Contact your local charity shop
The sooner you get rid of that clutter, the more organized you will feel. So go ahead and make contact with your local charity shop. Ask them what types of items they accept and the expected date when you will be delivering stuff to their door. Charity shops are usually more than happy to accept clothes that are in good condition.
Reward yourself
Decide with the family how you are going to reward yourself at the end of your declutter day. Going out for a family meal to celebrate your big clean up is a great way to celebrate your hard work. It will help to keep you motivated throughout the day.

Start by decluttering the clothes in your closet. This is one of the many culprits of a cluttered home. As you buy clothes each season or over the years, your clothes seem to accumulate at breakneck speed. Before you know it, you have 100 items of clothes, of which you only have 10 favorite clothes items that you wear on a regular basis.
Firstly, assess your closet to see whether there is adequate space to fit all your clothes. If your house does not have adequate storage for your clothes, then it may be time to buy yourself some more closets. In most cases, it is more likely that you have adequate storage and too many clothes, rather than the situation of not having enough storage.
If you need to buy more closets, you will still need to sort through your clothes to find out exactly how much storage you need. So the first step with decluttering your closet is to sort through your clothes to decide what to throw away. A good rule of thumb is to throw out clothes that you haven’t used in a year. Let’s be honest with ourselves. If we haven’t worn an item of clothes in a year, the chances that we are suddenly going to decide to wear that particular item is pretty low. So let’s do ourselves a favor and throw that item out. Once you get going, you will that you have a nice decent pile of clothes to throw out.
If you are having a hard time deciding what to throw out, you may like to throw your clothes out based on other criteria. Some useful criteria include how often you wear that particular item. If you only wear that item occasionally and it is really not your favorite at all, it may be time to throw it out. Also look at the quality of the clothes item. If it is an el cheapo item, don’t sweat over whether or not to throw it out. It’s really not worth the angst. So just go ahead and throw it out.
One exception to the “never used in a year so throw out” rule are special items of clothing. By that I mean, categories of clothes which are special like formal dresses and jackets. This could include formal clothing that you wear to attend special events like balls, weddings or christenings. Take care and decide carefully whether you could see yourself wearing that item at the next formal event you are invited to. Some people like to buy new clothes for these special events, so maybe there is no need to hang on to that jacket that you have had for 10 years. After all, it’s going to look just a tad out of fashion if you wear that 10 year old jacket to that special formal event?
So far with our project declutter closet, we should have by now sorted through all our clothes to decide what to throw out and what to keep. Follow the 1 year rule and you won’t go too wrong. The next thing to attend to is to buy storage if you feel you don’t have adequate storage. But make sure you do this step only after you have sorted through your clothes. You may find yourself saving money because after having thrown out your clothes, you may find that you don’t need as much storage as you thought you might.

Organizing Paper Clutter
If you are decluttering your study, now may be the time to take control with organizing paper clutter. Do you find paper stacking up everywhere in your home? This could be in the form of bills, newspapers, working papers or pamphlets through your mail box. The options are endless with how we manage to accumulate paper.
The secret to keeping all that paper under control is to take action now. When you collect your mail from your mail box, don’t just leave it in a pile on the kitchen bench to be sorted later. If you open your mail straight away, keep what you need and throw away the rest right now.
If you get lots of junk mail delivered to your mail box, and you are sick of clearing away the junk mail every day, it might be a good idea to put up a big sign on your mail box saying no junk mail here please. After all, other people are causing you extra work that you ill need.
Your study is a classic area for accumulating stacks of paper. If you have a home study office, try and keep it paperless. Granted, there will still be important stuff that you need to keep in paper form, but in this digital age, a lot of our bills, credit card statements and shareholder statements now all come in electronic form.
Make a request to your service providers to have all your bills, credit card statements and shareholder statements sent electronically to you, if you haven’t already nominated for it to be sent in this format.
This simple strategy should help you eliminate a lot of paper that you would otherwise accumulate.
Printing out lots of things is also another no no in your study. Resist the urge and do your bit for the environment. Unless it is really necessary to print something out, as an alternative, save a copy on your computer if you need to refer to it later. Most of the time after we have printed something, we find that we no longer need it anyway.
Usually printed matter will eventually find its way in a huge stack of papers that we will have to sort later. Rather than getting to this state of having papers to sort, just don’t create those stacks of papers in the first place.
Newspapers are another big culprit. Have a central place where you collect your old newspapers and throw them away on a regular basis when they start to accumulate.
If you are one of those people who likes to jot down your errands and to do lists on scraps of paper, it might be time to change habits and carry a small notebook with you. That way, you can make a to do list to your heart’s content all in one central location.

A good way for planning the layout of your kitchen is to start with a blank slate. Imagine that your kitchen is empty. Yes, I know it might be a bit difficult imagining your kitchen looking completely clutter free, but it did have another life before you occupied your house.
Look at the positioning of your fixtures that is, the things that you can’t change. This will include where you stovetop is and where your cupboards are if they are fixed furniture fittings.
If you have an option of moving your cupboards, you may also be able to change the location of your cupboards so that you can make better use of space.
This approach to decluttering your kitchen really starts with a helicopter view of your kitchen. If someone was flying over your kitchen and looking down at your kitchen, what would they see. Would they see a well organized kitchen or would they see a kitchen full of clutter?
Let’s start with the high level view of your kitchen. Grab a piece of butcher paper and draw out the layout of your kitchen. Now have a good look at how you currently have things organized. Start off with drawing boxes for the location of cupboard space, the location of your stovetop, location of your fridge etc.
For each box that you have drawn as a cupboard, label each cupboard with its intended occupants. If you are going to put utensils in this cupboard, label the cupboard utensils. Every category of items in your kitchen should have a home. Going through this process will help you decide whether or not you have adequate storage in your kitchen.
If you don’t have adequate storage in your kitchen, then you may need to consider creating extra storage space. This may not necessarily mean installing more cupboard space but it could be as simple as installing extra shelves in your existing cupboards.
Now that you have drawn yourself a mud map of your kitchen, take a look at the accessibility of things in relation to each other. Use your cupboards wisely. For items that you only use occasionally, store these items in higher cupboards. For items that you use frequently, store them in the most accessible cupboards.
Have a look at your benchtops. Are they cluttered with lots of items? Your benchtop should be relatively clutter free and only have items that you need on a regular basis. It’s time to be more brutal and clear that kitchen bench free of all clutter.

If you work in an office, reducing clutter in your office should be a top priority as it will improve your efficiency and do wonders for getting work done quickly. Your boss will also be impressed that you are an efficient worker with a well organized office cubicle.
Are you a culprit when it comes to not being able to locate a file that you need in order to complete urgent work? Or how about that professional development course you wanted to go on but couldn’t find the promotion pamphlet?
Bet you can relate to a colleague you know who has the last 10 years of filing in his office cubicle? Sometimes it is hard to find him or her to chat because he or she is buried in a mountain of paperwork. Or maybe you are the resident colleague who has mountains of paperwork in his office cubicle?
If any of the above applies to you, then it’s time to get operation declutter office under way. These are all things that we don’t need extra hassles with when we are already busy at work. Having a clean and tidy office means that you can save time by not having to spend endless hours searching for something. If you deal with clients for your work, having an organized work space leaves a much better impression. The cleaners will also thank you for it.
Similar to our declutter day where we cleaned out our closet, we can take a similar approach to cleaning our office. Firstly, in order to reduce clutter we will need to decide what we to throw out and what we want to keep. Sort your stuff into two piles, one for stuff you want to keep and the other pile for stuff that you want to throw away. For the stuff that you want to throw away, get yourself a box and start to throw away stuff that you don’t need into this box.
Secondly, the key to making an office space workable is to have a system in place for allowing you to find things. Your computer is usually the hub of your workspace. So it is important to make sure that you keep your computer area clear. No matter what, make sure that you keep the area around your computer clear of stuff.
You should aim to have only essential items on your desk. If you have a current project on the go, then files and documents related to that project should be easily accessible. If you have files and documents relating to past projects that have been completed and that you no longer have a need to access, then file these items away.
Another good approach is to aim for a paperless office rather than spend a lot of time organizing paper clutter. A lot of companies these days have paperless records management systems. If you work in a company which has a records management system in place, then it is a good idea to adopt the philosophy of having a paperless office. After all these systems are designed so that you can find documents easily online rather than in physical form.
Review the storage area around your office. Do you have an adequate storage area? What access do you have to cupboards and shelves? Are they in close proximity to your work area so that you can easily access files when you need to? If you find that you don’t have enough storage area, then it may be time to get yourself a new filing cabinet or more cupboard space.
Once you have adequate storage space, review the layout of your office. It may be necessary to reorganise the storage area around you. If there are files and documents that you need to access on a daily basis, make sure that they are easily and quickly accessible to you.
Being able to locate documents quickly and easily is another element of a well organized office space. Have a look at your filing cabinet and see how you have organized your files. Do these file categories still make sense? Decide on whether you should file your documents by project or by chronological order. It really depends what type of work you are involved in. Our lives are full of material possessions and to declutter your life is all about getting rid of some of these material possessions. By nature, we as human beings seem to be collectors or hoarders. In fact some of our hobbies revolve around collecting items. We have our China ware collection, our favorite books collection, the kids soft toy collection, and our prized collection of things we bought whilst on holiday.
Then off course, there are all those presents that we received from family and friends. Everyone thought that we could do with an extra kitchen appliance, an extra item of clothing, something for the garden, something for our new living room or new office, and the list is endless.
Why do we collect so much clutter in your life? If we want to simplify our life, we should also partake in decluttering our life. It will make us feel much better and allow us to live more simply. Clutter may seem such a silly problem to have but it can easily take its toll on us both emotionally and physically.
Whenever we step into our house, too much clutter around us can make us feel stressed out and emotionally tired. No sooner than we have stepped into the door, that we find ourselves tripping over something in the bedroom as we were on our way to going somewhere to find something that we just can’t seem to locate. So clutter can affect us physically as well. Hopefully it is nothing more serious than a stubbed toe. But why have our house in this state when we can have it clutter free?
It might be time to review your values and assess your relationship with material items. We usually have an attachment to material items because of its association with something or someone. If someone that we are close to gave us something special for our birthday, it is likely that we are going to be sentimental about it and not feel that we can throw it away.
If we are trying to succeed at advancing in our career and have bought lots of personal development books to study topic A, B & C, then we associate having these books as essential to succeeding in our goal to be successful with our career. There is nothing wrong with collecting books, but if we keep buying more and more books, our house is going to look like a book shop someday.
We might decide to change our approach to buying things and find innovative ways to achieve the same goals. Why not use the library and make use of the resources at our local library. That way, we can borrow out the book and read the book. When we are done with reading the book, we can return it to our library.
We often find ourselves buying stuff, but down the track our circumstances change and we no find use for it. This situation can often apply to hobbies that we get into. Whether it be setting up an aquarium in our living room or buying home gym equipment, we may find that down the track we are no longer pursuing these hobbies. So now is the time to simplify your life and get rid of items we no longer need.
Once we lift the burden from ourselves of collecting clutter, we will find a renewed approach to living clutter free in our home. What a relief it is to be able to walk easily through our home without bumping into anything, or running around trying to find a place to store the next latest kitchen gadget that we bought on sale.

Our home is the hub of all our activities and as we go through our days, somehow the frenzy of our daily activities means that our home sometimes doesn’t get the tender loving care it deserves.
So that you don’t overwhelm yourself with trying to reduce clutter in your home overnight, it’s best to start by decluttering one room at a time. So firstly, select a room to declutter. You may choose a room to declutter a room based on any number of criteria. It may be the easy room to declutter. Your laundry room may be a good room to choose. You wouldn’t think a laundry room could get cluttered, but any room can pile up with clutter in no time.
There are two ways to go with decluttering your room. If you have time, you could set aside a declutter day and get a few rooms organized. Or you could set aside some time each day, say a couple of hours and start taking action to reduce clutter. This is really a personal choice in terms of what works best for you.
Firstly, the next thing you need to do once you have chosen which room to declutter is to survey the room. Have a look at the layout of the room and how things are organized. Things to keep in mind are that each item in the room should have a home and be stored in a particular location. You also need to have adequate storage for all your possessions. The room should also be set up in such a way that it is easy for you to do regular cleaning. If there are nooks and crannies which will be hard to get to for cleaning, then you may need to consider reorganizing the layout of things in your room.

So we have made the commitment to have a declutter day to get organized. Firstly, decide which is your top priority room in terms of wanting to reduce clutter. A good place to start is often the closet. You may find your closet crammed with all sort of things from shoes that haven’t been worn for a long time to multiple winter coats to choose from. How about that missing pair of gloves where you just couldn’t locate one glove?
So you have made a good start with your closet to decided what is clutter and what isn’t clutter. The next step is to apply some simple solutions to get things organized. So in the case of your closet, you will need to have efficient storage to help reduce clutter. Look at the storage in your closet and see how good your shelf space is. Do you find it easy to get to your office? If is not easily accessible, reorganize the shelf space by installing some shelves.
Another good storage method which works wonders is to purchase stackable containers and bins. That way, every item has a home. Decide where the item will be located, and clearly label the containers so you don’t have to go searching through your whole closet looking for the item. Off course, if you are going to label the containers, make sure that when you use that item, you return it to its rightful place. Remember our little problem above where we couldn’t find one side of our gloves. With everything labelled correctly and returned to its rightful place, missing gloves will be a thing of the past for you!
As part of our declutter day, we will also need to throw stuff away. We all have stuff that we just can’t bear to part with. They may be old records or old magazines or presents that our close friends or relatives gave us. A lot of people have a hard time throwing things away may be because of sentimental value or maybe its just because we like hoarding stuff. But in order to reduce clutter, we will have to make some firm decisions to throw stuff away. So put the stuff that you want to throw away in a pile and get rid of it.
A good rule is that if you haven’t used something for a year, it is not likely that you will use it. Clothes is a good example where you can apply this rule. Rather than have your wardrobe crammed full of clothes that you don’t wear, start to reduce clutter by throwing away the clothes that you haven’t worn for a year.
Got magazines from two years back that you were meaning to read? If you haven’t caught up on reading back issues of magazines, maybe it’s time to throw away those old magazines. If there are articles in the magazines that you want to keep, take these articles and file them away in a folder for later use.

Isn’t it time you had a Declutter Day?
Having a declutter day is an ideal way to get started on reducing clutter in your home. What exactly is a declutter day? It is a day that you set aside to reduce clutter in your home. So let’s get started with getting organized to have a successful declutter day.
Firstly, you will need to get everyone in the family involved. If you are going to have a successful declutter day, the more you can get family members to take ownership of their possessions and clutter, the better off you will be.
Allocate a room to be organized. For each of the kids, it will be their own room that they will be responsible for reducing clutter.
Secondly, you will need to get some boxes for throwing items away. If you work in an office, you can always find spare boxes lying around which you can bring home for your declutter day. Or you can always collect boxes at your local supermarket.
if you think you are going to be throwing away a lot of junk, you may want to hire a skip bin, so that you can throw things straight away. Otherwise, you may find yourself creating extra piles of clutter in your living room whilst you are waiting to get rid of all that clutter.
The key to having a successful decluttering day is to set realistic goals. You are not going to be able to declutter your whole house in one day. So set yourself some realistic goals. Maybe you might decide that you can realistically organize 1 or 2 rooms for the day.
If you clear away 1 room and your husband or partner clears away another room, that’s 2 rooms that you can declutter for the day. And if the kids clear their own rooms, that will be the kids’ rooms organized and declutter free. That’s great progress for a day’s work.
Now that you have collected your boxes or skip bin, the main task ahead is to throw away any clutter. Clutter comes in many forms. If you have more than 1 item that achieves the same purpose, throw those extra items away. There is no point having 3 kitchen blenders if you only use 1 blender regularly.
Another category of items that you should be throwing away are old items. If you have been using the same non stick pan for years and years, and it is really not serving its purpose anymore, throw it away. No point keeping it if it is old and dysfunctional.
You should also throw away broken items. If you were planning to fix up your old TV or old computer and never got around to it, chances are likely that you will never get around to fixing it. Best to do yourself a favor and throw it away. Unfortunately, these days we live in a throw away society and sometimes it is cheaper to buy a new item than to try and have it repaired.
Once you have had your declutter day or two, you will be well on your way to having a neat and organized home.
